It was another day for the protector of Abul. Once again she was in the city doing the usual good deeds that earned her the fame she had acquired over the years. Her kind nature and normally calm demeanor even in the face of danger had earned her both the respect and admiration of the people here. It had not always been this way, as a child she was hated and despised because he way of dealing with bullies was cruel and unusual. People feared what they did not understand. Even now, there were some that were fearful of her presence. Their minds often dancing with the dangerous possibility that she might snap and destroy them all any moment. However, she had never done so. Enzeru had always protected the people, her people, with a certain zen like calm that very few people were able to achieve.
How had she accomplished this? She had lived her life facing uncertainty and danger to bring knowledge to the world. The first to enter unopened and un-pilfered tombs was often the first to die. Instead of dieing, she used her unusual power over what she now knew to be ki and her amazing strength to get her to her goal and out again, disabling traps along the way to make room for the people whom would do a majority of the work. It was a good life full of adventure and excitement. Lately she had not done so much archeology as she once had. Enzeru had begun to settle down. Her boyfriend was partially to than for that. The thought of getting home to him had become more exciting than facing unknown dangers and deadly traps to discover history. There were time when she longed for the time when the world was her’s for the discovering.
“Would ya mind walkin a little faster young lady? I don’t wanna miss my programs.”
“Oh, sorry, I was just thinking.”
Enzeru smiled uneasily at the old lady when she had helped with her shopping. Her thoughts had stopped her in the doorway, her arms full of bags. Quickly, the kind assistant made her way to the kitchen and deposited the bags on the counter. As she was putting them away, the elder took a seat in front of her tv. As soon as she turned up the volume, Enzeru could hear the news report.
“The new game system is sweeping the world by storm. It is the first virtual reality device to hit the market and is flying off the shelves as soon as it’s stocked.”
“That’s right Alice, the game system is expected to earn Norimbo over a billion dollars the first month alone. Popular titles Marvin Cart and Marvin Brothers as well as Zella are expected to fetch another billion as they are released for this console. The system does come packaged with a few games including one hit massively multiplayer game set in the feudal era. I believe it has been as anticipated as the system itself.”
“People are going to be taking a lot of sick days, Jim.”
The two news anchors laughed as Enzeru put a jar of peanut butter in the cabinet. That new game system sounded interesting. She always wanted to try the virtual reality demos for it but never had time to. Perhaps she should get one on her way home. It would give her and Krillin something fun to do that did not put them both in mortal danger.
Once her duties to the elder were complete, the young woman left and made her way to the nearest electronics store. Thankfully, not everyone in Abul was capable of buying a game system nor cared for one. Most of the inhabitants were poor merchants, few of which were middle class or higher. There were a few left here in the desert city most people overlooked even if they came this way, and not one would think of looking her for them.
He’s going to be so surprised. I hope he plays video games, it has been a while since I played.
Enzeru made her purchase with a more rare and localized currency, lapis lazuli stones. They had come from a mine left to her by her mother. When times were tough or when one wanted to save their zenni for traveling, they could always rely on the beautiful rare stone. In fact, the lady warrior had encrusted her cape with them, creating a beautiful look and slightly better protection than normal cloth. This alone bumped her into the upper class in status, even if she had not been adopted by the king after her mother’s death. In the end, it had been the toxin from a tomb that killed her. Ironically enough, Enzeru had been immune due to her paternal saiyan blood causing a rare immunity to the toxic traps. She had completed her mother’s job that day at the young age of ten, having set her heart and mind to avenging her through doing so. This was the start of her years of training to become what her mother and father had both been, the best at entering ancient locations full of traps and making it out alive.
The flight back home was one of silent internal communication with herself. As a child she had little chance to play video games until after her mother’s death and she was moved to the palace to be shut away like some valuable and delicate thing that was only for top shelf display. Those two years, she spent with the princes rather than the princesses. Her time was spent sword fighting and practicing martial arts and archery. The girls had taunted her relentlessly about her lack of poshness. On rainy days she would sneak over to the boys’ rooms and play video games all day, at least until she got caught and sent back to study proper manners and music with the girls. That went on until the day she broke free and enrolled herself in school, quickly surpassing her peers and moving on to college and then into the world of archeology. Even after she had left, the royal family supported her until she could support herself. Now here she was with a wonderful home and a wonderful boyfriend. Life could not get any better than this.
She arrived at her own doorstep, the warm desert air welcoming her with a light breeze. Enzeru entered and removed her shoes and cape before rushing off to the den though a door to the left of the stairs. Inside was a large television, comfortable furniture, and a minibar. This was the perfect room for watching movies and would now also be the room for video games. She took the hard plastic boxy object out of the cardboard and plastic it was contained in before hooking it up to the power and the television. She then took out the headsets, unfolding just the one for herself and setting it on her head.
I think I’ll try it out, just to make sure it works.
She lowered the green visor over her eyes and turned on the system. In an instant, the big logo came out of no where and stopped in front of her. Impatiently she waited until the menu screen came up for her to select a game. She chose the game warring states. After she registered, she chose a character name, her own name oddly enough. Enzeru then chose a class, an archer. She had heard somewhere archers were the money makers on the game and, naturally, she wanted to be the one to provide awesome gear for her friends and perhaps even run a guild.
A moment later she was thrust into the game. She stood on a platform floating in the sky, it was so realistic, it actually felt like she was in the game. Before her stood a very impatient looking man.
Must be an NPC I’m supposed to talk to.
“Hi there, I’m new.”
“Welcome to Warring States. Would you like me to send you to new start city?”
“Yes, please.”
“There will be some starter items in your inventory. Enjoy the game.”
Enzeru appeared in the middle of a busy city. Other players of various level hopped around as she watched in wonderment. Never before had the fem gamer thought the game would be so awesome and lifelike. She looked down at herself and the pajamas she was wearing. This wouldn’t do. He said something about her inventory, perhaps the bag on her shoulder was it. Looking inside, she pulled out a purple dress. It magically appeared on her. Next she pulled out some arrows and a bow. Hopefully she would remember her archery lessons from her childhood. She jumped to the entrance of the city, surprised by the height she managed to get. Looking around, she spotted some guards picking off low level monsters nearby.
“Let me help you guys with this, I could use the experience.”
“We can handle it, citizen. Be on your way.”
Enzeru frowned, guards were so high and mighty, bah, she would show them. She hopped off to another spawn nearby and began firing at the monsters. It took three arrows to take out one. Again she fired at a monster. This time all of them seemed to be focused on her. Frantically, she fired at another monster, the arrow pierced it and she felt herself become stronger as a light flashed around her. A smirk crossed her face, she had advanced to level two. She was not taking out monsters in two hits. It was not long until she leveled to three. Now she was taking them down in a single hit. The power to defeat enemies so easily was exhilarating. Enzeru felt she was ready for something bigger.
Quickly, she hopped to the teleported outside the city and selected devil’s island. The archer was teleported to a group of islands. Looking around, she saw no monsters, so she started hopping around looking for some. It wasn’t long before she hopped into the middle of a huge group and found herself surrounded. She was almost sure that death was imminent. Just then a high level archer hopped by, killing the monsters in one scattering of glowing arrows.
“Need a team?”
He asked, never once looking at her, his eyes trained on the lookout for respawns.
“Yeah I do, thank you.”
Enzeru joined the team just in time for another batch of monsters to appear, each in their own lighted portals and surrounding the lower level archer.
“Got a tank coming, just don’t get hit. No one who has died has messaged me back and I need points from leveling lowbies.”
“Don’t worry, I’m a survivor.”
It wasn’t long until their tank had arrived. A Trojan, judging by his duel wield skills. His weapons glowed as he look a position in front of Enzeru. The monsters hook very little damage on him when they managed to hit him and he, too, killed them in one hit. A few others joined, two fellow lowbies and a healer. The experience she got from this was amazing and it wasn’t long before she learned the scatter skill for herself. Minutes later, she was up in the air helping the other archer fly about killing monsters and leveling other lowbies. One asked for team and was killed by a monster right before he could be invited. There was never any further sign of him, he didn’t even leave behind a spirit.
“Aren’t you supposed to turn into a ghost when you die?”
“Yeah, but no one is turning into one or replying to whispers.”
“That isn’t good. I have a bad feeling.”
“Yeah, same here. Maybe we should explore a bit and see if we can find anything. First, you need better gear.”
The high level archer led her to the market. Together they had amassed quite a bit of gold from leveling low levels all afternoon. They managed to buy her a full set of powerful gear and dye it purple. She looked down at her glowing bow and back at her large wings. It had not taken long to get this far with a little help. Imagine what she could do for her friends and a guild if they were to play the game. Yajirobe would probably love this and the warrior class would suit him well.
“Let’s go exploring.”
“Yeah, maybe we can find out what the problem is.”
For a solid hour, they explored the area until they came to a place that wasn’t on the map called the cave of stolen souls. Both of them agreed this was far too scary to do alone so they went in together. All around them the spirits of those who died, yes actual ghost forms, floated about.
“About time you two got here. We’re trapped, get us out.”
The voice was the voice of the lowbie they had watched die earlier.
“Have you tried relogging?”
“We can’t even turn off the game, our hands won‘t touch the console.”
Enzeru took a moment to examine the area until she saw a rocky throne before her and perched on it was a demon. Her smirked as he looked over them, his eyes full of hate. There was no monster like this anywhere in the game. It had to be a hacker.
“Hacking isn’t cool, you know.”
He shoved the lowbie’s spirit aside as he spoke and made his way to the two archers.
“Hmm, so I have been discovered. I will let you know I am no hacker. I am an actual demon. As I gather souls in the game world here, my friend is preparing to gather them in the real world.”
The females archer looked over at her friend.
“This is too far beyond you, let me handle this. If the real world is involved and he can surpass the confines of the game then so can I.”
Enzeru began to concentrate, her aura beginning to shine through the game before bursting to life in a grand sow of pixilated color before it made the world it surrounded show it’s real form. Before the demon stood a very real, very angry martial artist capable of blasting him back to HFIL.
The archer friend made his way out of the cave quickly, not wanting to get mixed up in this. The demon caught Enzeru off guard with a punch to the stomach.
“I’d love to take your soul directly.”
Enzeru recovered quickly and grabbed the demon by the neck before slamming him against a wall and laying into him with several quick punches to the gut and a few knees to the ribs.
“You scum!”
He tried to hit her back, but being of such a low class of demons, he could not keep up with her speed.
“Ugh, fine. It’s time I unleashed my power on you.”
The demon gathered a giant ball of ki and hurled it at her. It was all Enzeru could do to stumble forward and unplug the game. This wasn’t going to be over, but she needed time to build a strategy. This was a problem, a real and terrible problem.
The woman looked around and noticed her den was trashed. Had she done this? No, it could not have been just her. The demon was using the game to reach her in the real world. In time she would have to go back there and defeat him, but for now, she needed to rest.
Enzeru heard footsteps outside the den and quickly shoved the game system in a corner where it would not be easily found. The last thing she needed was that devil getting his hands on Krillin. Next time, however, the demon would meet his maker.
