The winter was brutal this year. Maiyah felt as if she should have expected it, but no matter how hard she tried to prepare for the frigid shift, she always found herself cursing up a storm and beating her heater with a wrench, either in a rage or in the hopes of actually getting it to work. By the end of the day, however, she could only bundle up in her apartment, crammed in the seedier parts of West City, safe from the watchful eye of Metropolitan patrols. The complex itself was dank and not suited for the rains that came every once in a while. Often the corners of the carpeted halls would flood up after a downpour and make for a miserable trek from one's room to the laundrey room.
Not that Maiyah would have much reason to leave the room for laundrey all that often. She made it a point to not to do when the rains came, and for that very reason. This winter was a very stay-at-home winter overall. Maiyah had few clients to contact and even fewer that called her back. Most requests were deathtraps in this kind of weather, at least to her. To go up into the mountains during a frigid winter such as this one was like asking her to drink a pint of nitric acid, especially if it were for something so minute as a small medallion or the stored remain of some mummified corpse.
"I pity the fools that take that moron's bill," she muttered. She heard a soft noise coming from her right, and she looked on, greeting the Egyptian Mau that came up to her and rubbed his head against her arm. "You think so too?" she asked quietly, looking down at the feline with lowered eyelids. She pulled her arm out of the bundle she was wrapped up in and ran her hand along the cat's back, his hind raising up to her touch and a low purr escaping him. "Yeah... my baby thinks so too," she said quietly, "Don't you Gordy." The Mau responded with a deep noise and she picked him up, settling him in her lap.
"Don't worry, I'm sure I'll spot an easy target and bring food home soon," she said, scratching his head, "Hell, maybe I'll have enough to bring you home some salmon. Would you like that? Yes, you'd like that, wouldn't you." Looking back up at the television, Maiyah went silent, her hand still running along Gordy's back as he curled up against her. The screen crackled with noise, but underneath the flickering pixels was the top of an anchorman signaling to the weather guy. She narrowed her green eyes as he went on about more snow in the next coming day or so, as well as harsh winds and thick clouds to block out the sun.
"Fucking kidding me," she muttered, the warmth in her voice from greeting the cat earlier dropping like a stone, "Things keep going on like this and I may actually have to go take one of those bills to keep the heat on. Goddamnit..."
