Episode 1[/u]
"How To Win Friends And Influence People....
Saikuro read the cover of the now famous book authored by Dale Carnegie. Coming into his second year of high school, he wanted things to be quite different than his freshman year.
Even now, while walking on his way to school, reading the back cover of the book to confirm its legitimacy, he experienced flashbacks of what happened last year at West City High.
Images of his head dunked in a toilet while one assailant flushed it caused shivers to run down his spine.
But this year will be different!
He's going to try his best to make friends with as many people as he can, starting today. Nothing will stand in his wa-
Oooof!
"Hey, watch where you're going shrimp!"
I'm starting off on the wrong foot. OK, time to impress!
"I'm sorry for bumping into you. I didn't mean it, really."
A quick apology usually mends anger.
"What!? An apology? Is that all!? Me and my boys here are angry!"
The delinquents did look rather menacing. All three of them averaging at least six feet. They towered over Saikuro by more than a few inches and seemed bent on hurting him. Why? Who knows. All Saikuro knew was that he had to diffuse the situation. And there was only one way to do that.......
Run away!
Saikuro sprinted through the barrier the thugs tried to contain him in. It was quite amazing how fast he was running while clutching his backpack to his hip. Maybe his speed increased due to his fear of what would happen if the thugs got a hold of him.
Don't look back! Don't look back!
Before he knew it, Saikuro was already at the main entrance of the school. He took a moment to catch his breath before entering the school.
Man, school barely started and here I am, already making enemies. Well, good thing I enrolled into the Karat-
Saikuro bumped into someone else again. This time, his stuff, as well as the belongings of the other individual, were now sprawled on the floor.
"I'm sorry!"
"I'm sorry!"
They both managed to say simultaneously.
Saikuro looked up to see that the person he bumped into was a girl. A pretty one at that.
Lucky! He cheered inwardly.
He admired her appearance as he helped gather her belongings on the floor. Catching a feature or two by stealing glances at her, from her long brown hair to her "well endowed" chest. They stood up holding each other's belongings and exchanged with each other. There was an awkward silence between the two before the bell to class rang.
"I have to go to class, excuse me!" The girl said before running off.
"W-Wait! What's your na-" but she was too far gone before Saikuro could finish his statement.
Dammit! I meet a cute girl and I don't even know her name!
Saikuro sulked as he went to class, eager to get the school day over with so he could begin his training in the school's karate program.
-----------------
I hate the school's karate program! Saikuro lamented as he received the hard end of a fist that sent his body crashing on the ground.
Last year's number one Karate rookie and this year's City Champion hopeful, Gunz, was using Saikuro as a punching bag. The other members sat and watched in laughter as Gunz gave Saikuro a beating. Feeling as if he couldn't take anymore, Saikuro decided that there was only one thing he could do....
Beg for mercy.
He placed his hand up in defeat, and used the other hand to wipe some blood that was trickling down his nose. "Stop, please! I can't fight back, you guys haven't even taught me anything!"
Gunz stopped dead in his tracks. He looked at Saikuro, his eyes carrying shame. But then, suddenly, Gunz and the other members burst into a chorus of laughter.
"Do you even know why we allowed a weakling like you to join? Because we needed a punching bag. Teaching a novice like you with absolutely no talent or ability would only be a waste of time!" Gunz said.
He chuckled as he opened up his karate gui, showing off his muscular, chiseled body to not only his fellow members, but to Saikuro.
"Do you see this?! These beautiful muscles were a godsend. Your pathetic, scrawny frame is the reason why you will never make it in this world as a martial artist, so you might as well give up!"
Saikuro felt his heart sink into the deepest pit of his stomach.
No way....
He had truly hoped that in joining the after school karate program, he could turn his luck around, maybe even defend himself from bullies who would want to gang up on him just like earlier in the day. But, even here, they laughed and mocked at him. It seemed that he would have to live as the school's weakling forever.....
"Now be a good punching bag and take my attacks like a man!" Gunz said.
And the beating continued......
------------------
Owe! It hurts, it hurts....
Saikuro was picking at his wounds on his way home from his Karate program. Several bruises were present on his arms and stomach (that was hiding underneath his school uniform), as well as on his cheek, which he used a band-aid to cover.
Gunz, that jerk! If I was stronger I would have put him in his place! I'll make him pay for picking on me!
Saikuro rubbed his arm, trying to ease the pain that had now become a burden on his body.
If I was as big and strong as Gunz was, I would defend myself and others, not bully other people. But it seems that now it wouldn't be wise for me to show up to the karate program after school anymo-
Saikuro bumped into someone else again. He looked up, his eye wincing, but soon his pupils would grow wide with surprise as he realized that he bumped into the same pack of thugs that chased him off earlier.
"Well, well boys, look at who it is." The alpha male of the threesome said.
Scared out of his mind, Saikuro ran the other way on instinct, taking off as fast as he could. The thugs were hot on his trail, in fact, they were approaching him.
I gotta lose them!
Saikuro turned a corner. Unfortunately for him, he turned in a dark alley where a tall fence greeted him. As soon as he turned around, the three thugs had surrounded him.
"Hey....guys. Can't we just be friends?" Saikuro asked as he backed away from them.
"Friends? With a weakling like you? Not a chance!"
OOOMF!
A fist dug deep in Saikuro's stomach. A wad of saliva slung from his mouth and onto the concrete beneath him. He doubled over in pain, falling down onto his knees.
Each thug took a turn using his head as a soccer ball, kicking and stomping on it. Saikuro could feel his vision fading and his body turning numb from the pain.
Da-dammit. I can't fight back....
"That's enough you hoodlums!" A feminine voice shouted.
The three thugs turned to see a girl blocking them off from the other side of the alley.
Hey, it's that same girl I bumped into earlier. What is she doing here? If she fights these guys then she's seriously going to die!
"What are you doing?! Run away!" Saikuro shouted to her.
"Shut up!" One of the hoodlums said, kicking Saikuro in his face.
"HAAAAAH!" The girl shouted, her body elevating several inches off of the ground. Her body spun in mid air like a ballerina before she landed a devastating spin-kick to the jaw of Saikuro's attacker.
The other two thugs were surprised to see one of their own felled by a single move from a girl. They both thought it best to charge her at once, both attempting to punch her in her face.
The girl waited for the thugs to draw near until she side-stepped out of the way, tripping one of the thugs on top of the other. They both landed with a resounding thud, where they laid unconscious.
"Here, I'll help you up," the girl said, allowing Saikuro to use her body as a crutch.
"T-thank you very much. But, um....who are you? And how did you know I was being attacked?" Saikuro asked.
"Your questions can wait. Right now you need a place to sit," she said.
The two of them found a park bench where the girl carefully sat Saikuro down it. She then took a seat beside him, where she began to examine his injuries.
"I'm fine really." Saikuro insisted. "Just answer my questions.
"My name is Jana. Jana Chun. And I shadowed you after I saw you running away from the group of thugs. If that wasn't a red flag then I don't know what is," Jana said.
Saikuro felt embarrassed a little, being saved by a girl and all. But she was obviously more than capable of handling herself.
"Oh, um. You were amazing back there by the way. What martial art are you into?"
"Chinese Martial Arts and Tae-Kwon Do. Are you into martial arts yourself?" Jana asked.
"Um, sort of. You see, I'm in the Karate Club at school but it turns out they are using me as a punching bag," Saikuro said, embarrassed to tell her.
"No way. You need to stand up for yourself, um....what's your name by the way?"
"My name is Saikuro. Saikuro Mizhara. And I would love to stand up for myself but I'm not nearly strong enough, or skillful enough to do it. I'm a weakling, and I have no talent in martial arts....." Saikuro sulked.
"That's not true! Just look at me! I'm small and I took out those three thugs without breaking a sweat! You can too with the proper training. Here, I'll show you!" Jana took Saikuro by the wrist and stood him up on his feet. She assumed a basic Karate stance (or at least her best imitation of one), and Saikuro did the same.
"I'm going to teach you how to side-step," Jana said.
"Side-step?" Saikuro repeated.
"That's right! Now, the first thing you should always do is keep your balance. When you move, you move in a circle, not forward and back. Lastly, maintain your stance at all times, no matter what! Now, try to throw a punch at me."
"A punch? No way, I can't hit a girl."
Jana frowned. Hmmm, he does seem like the type to have such morals. I guess I'll have to excite him a bit.
In a single, quick motion, Jana slapped the side of Saikuro's cheek.
"You....you bastard!"
It's surprisingly easy to get him riled up....
"Take this!" Saikuro shouted, attempting to punch Jana in her face.
In a single, blurred motion, Jana moved in a circular pattern counter-clockwise, dodging the punch by side-stepping. She followed up her side-step by sticking her foot out, tripping Saikuro in the process.
"Hey, hey, no fair!" Saikuro complained.
"And that's how you side-step! Practice this move enough and thugs won't even be able to touch you!"
